12-class program, next class starts on January 13, 2018.
Class for 3 and 4 years old: 9am or 10am
Class for 5 and 6 years old: 11am
Where: 106-2, st. Principale, Aylmer ( second floor on Sonart music school)

The external program was developed by the Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec and is recognized by the Quebec Ministry of Education. Intended for music teachers working in the private sector or in music schools, it offers a “classic” music education program. Using a developmental approach, it proposes learning through levels of progression designed to help students perfect their technical, musical and auditory skills. Each level suggests precise methods: exercises, studies, and pieces by Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary composers.

The program recommends a course in music theory (see description external program) offered at Sonart. This course teaches the fundamentals of musical language.

Students interested in taking the external program are invited to pass a yearly review (examination) for their desired level. Reviews take place in late May at the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau. Students who pass both the performance exam (instrument) and the theory exam for their level receive a certificate from the Conservatoire.

The external program is divided in three categories: Éveil, for students ages 5 to 7; Général, with eight levels of assesment, for ages 8 and up; and Pré-conservatoire, for pre-college-age (high-school) students or the ones that are considering a career in music. Interestingly, Secondary IV and V students at the Général or Pré-conservatoire level may be eligible for extra academic credits. However, in order to qualify they must submit a request to their school together with their certificate from the Conservatoire.
